WEEE REGISTER SOCIETY

About Us

The WEEE Register Society Ltd. was set up to assist producer companies in meeting their obligations for the responsible management of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and from September 2008, producer obligations for batteries and accumulators.

This is in line with the requirements of an EU Directive which establishes the principle of producer responsibility. The WEEE Directive requires producers to be responsible for the financing of the collection, treatment, recovery and environmentally sound disposal of WEEE from 13 August 2005 and the Battery and Accumulator Directive requires producers to be responsible for batteries and accumulators from 26 September 2008.

The principal functions of the Society include:

  • registration of producers and importers of electrical and electronic equipment and batteries and accumulators.
  • notifying the EPA where there is evidence of non compliance with the Regulations.
  • verification of visible Environmental Management Costs (vEMC) that are applicable to WEEE
  • determination of the market share of individual producers.

The Society has appointed Deloitte to carry out the latter function because it is precluded by law from seeing the underlying commercial data. This is described as the “WEEE Blackbox”.
