Battery and Accumulator Types.

The Waste Management (Batteries and Accumulators) Regulations 2008 S.I. No. 268 of 2008 provides guidance on types of batteries and accumulators;

A battery or accumulator means any source of electrical energy generated by direct conversion of chemical energy and consisting of one or more primary battery cells (non-rechargeable) or consisting of one or more secondary battery cells (rechargeable)

The types can be divided into Portable, Industrial and Automotive.

portable battery or accumulator means any battery, button cell, battery pack or accumulator that;

  1. is sealed
  2. can be hand-carried, or as appropriate
  3. is neither industrial or automotive

industrial battery or accumulator means any battery or accumulator designed for exclusively industrial or professional uses or is used in any type of electric vehicle.

automotive battery or accumulator means any battery or accumulator used for automotive starter, lighting or ignition power.
